Efficient soil cultivation is the foundation of successful farming. Choosing the right equipment for this process plays a key role in maintaining soil fertility, increasing crop yields, and preserving ecological balance. One important consideration is the choice between a traditional plow and a modern subsoiler, also known as a chisel. This article examines the advantages of using a chisel subsoiler over a plow for soil cultivation.
Testing and Development by the Favorit Plant
The Favorit Plant has successfully tested its own chisel subsoiler working unit. The tests confirmed that the chisel provides a working depth of up to 50 cm, which is an optimal depth for effective soil preparation. In addition, the chisel from the Favorit Plant is fully compatible with PSHK plows manufactured by the company, allowing for simple replacement of the working units without the need to purchase new equipment. This gives farmers greater flexibility in machinery use and reduces the cost of upgrading their agricultural equipment fleet.
Overview of Subsoilers and Plows
A plow is a traditional primary tillage implement that cuts into the soil and turns the soil layer to a depth of approximately 20-30 cm. Plows are used for weed control, soil aeration, and preparation for sowing.
A subsoiler (chisel) is a modern tillage implement that works the soil to a depth of 40-60 cm without completely turning it over. The chisel improves soil structure, promotes better aeration and water permeability, while preserving the soil's natural structure.
Advantages of a Subsoiler Over a Plow
- Preservation of Soil Structure. A subsoiler preserves the natural soil structure without completely turning it over. This helps preserve microorganisms, plant root systems, and natural organic matter, which are essential for soil health.
- Improved Aeration and Water Permeability. Deep loosening creates channels for air and water, improving soil aeration and its ability to absorb moisture. This reduces the risk of waterlogging and erosion, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
- Reduced Erosion. Preserving soil structure and its organic cover reduces the risk of wind and water erosion. A subsoiler helps keep the soil in place, reducing the loss of the fertile topsoil layer.
- Energy and Cost Savings. Using a subsoiler can be more cost-effective because it may require lower fuel and equipment costs compared with traditional plowing. Reduced tillage intensity can also help decrease equipment wear.
- Preservation of Organic Matter. A chisel helps preserve organic matter in the upper soil layer, which is important for maintaining soil fertility and structure. Organic matter provides nutrients for plants and improves the soil's water-holding capacity.
- Reduced Soil Compaction. Deep loosening helps reduce soil compaction, promoting better development of plant root systems. Lower compaction also improves the penetration of water and air into deeper soil layers.
- Versatility in Sustainable Farming Systems. A chisel integrates well into sustainable farming systems such as minimum tillage and plowless cultivation. This helps preserve soil biodiversity and improve its resilience to pests and diseases.
Examples of Subsoiler Use
Subsoilers are already being used successfully in many agricultural regions around the world. Farmers report higher yields, improved soil quality, and lower tillage costs. For example, in Western Europe, chisels are actively used in vineyards, where preserving soil structure is critically important for the development of grapevine root systems. The Favorit Plant has also received positive feedback from local farmers who have introduced its chisels into their farming practices, confirming their efficiency and reliability.
Conclusion
A subsoiler (chisel) offers several significant advantages over a traditional plow in soil cultivation. It helps preserve soil structure and organic matter, improves aeration and water permeability, and reduces the risk of erosion and compaction. In addition, the chisel can be a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for modern agriculture. Tests conducted by the Favorit Plant confirm its high performance and compatibility with existing equipment, making it an excellent choice for farmers. Introducing subsoilers into agricultural practices can significantly improve the sustainability and productivity of farmland, supporting the stable development of the agricultural sector in the future.
